Historical Notes About the MRWThe Metroplex Republican Women was certified with the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW) in 1962 under the name of “Airport Republican Women.” The ladies gathered the required 10 participants to become members in the TFRW. They elected Estelle Teague as the first club president. In 1982, the club changed its name to Metroplex Republican Women. At first the club met in the evenings in various homes. They soon changed to day meetings and have met at the Catfish Hut, Ryon’s Steak House, the Mid-Cities NE Sub-Courthouse, the Hurst Library and now at the Brookside Convention Center in Hurst. With the move to the Sub-Courthouse, the members started offering a light lunch for the convenience of the working members and guests—hence, the beginning of the now famous “Five-Dollar Lunch.”Building any Republican club in the 60’s was very hard and at different times, it was difficult to keep it going. The Nixon era was particularly hard. During the Clinton years, membership was down, but we are happy to say that the MRW ended 2005 with 160 ladies and 50 associate members. In 2005, the MRW placed 2nd (for medium sized clubs) in Lt. Gov. Dewhurst’s Membership Drive and was awarded $1,000.00.MRW has a reputation for being a very active, “on the grow” club. It is believed that the efforts of grassroots clubs such as the MRW, have contributed to the fact that Texas has become an indisputable Republican State in less than 50 years. Today Republicans boast about 2,000 elected offices across the state. That’s quite an accomplishment, considering that in 1967, there were only 4 Republican county office holders in the entire state. These are exciting times for our party, the MRW, our county, state, and nation! We have a lot of hard work to do in ramping up to the 2008 election, but we’re up to the task!
